Project Access Black History Month Event

Start that Business Sis, An Interactive Day with Project Access

A Purpose-Filled Invitation

On February 7th, 2025, I had the absolute joy of partnering with Project Access in Raleigh, NC during a time that felt spiritually, socially, and economically chaotic. Being asked to do something like this, in the midst of everything going on, was an honor I didn’t take lightly.

The Weight of the Moment

Black History Month was in full swing, and the political climate was especially charged. Just weeks into his second term, President Trump had already signed executive orders aimed at dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs across the federal government. These actions included terminating DEI initiatives and removing related content from federal agencies' websites.

With that backdrop, being in a room full of young Black girls, pouring into their confidence, creativity, and dreams, meant more than I can explain. DEI isn’t just a corporate buzzword; it’s our lived reality. It’s about showing up, being present, and sharing our stories in spaces that haven’t always been designed for us.

Why Project Access Mattered

What made this opportunity even more meaningful was where it was held. Project Access is a nonprofit that operates right here in Raleigh, providing free, on-site services and support through local resource centers. Their mission is rooted in uplifting communities by offering programs in health, education, employment, and engagement. Whether it’s fitness classes, job readiness workshops, or after-school support, their work is about building bridges and giving people the tools they need to thrive. Speaking in a space like that made perfect sense because it aligned with everything GLIMMER. stands for.

Creating the Experience

So when one of my classmates from North Carolina A&T, who also graduated with a degree in Social Work, reached out and asked if I’d speak at her job, I didn’t hesitate. She wanted a Black History Month presentation centered around entrepreneurship—something inspiring and easy to understand for elementary to middle school students.

I had about two weeks to prepare, and I made it a whole experience. I designed an interactive presentation that celebrated the roots of Black entrepreneurship and highlighted leaders like Madam C.J. Walker and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We discussed mindset, self-worth, and the power of our ideas. We watched a short educational video, filled out worksheets, and had real, heart-centered conversations.

A Lesson from History

The video we watched reminded us that even when faced with racism and systemic barriers, Black people in America still built businesses and uplifted communities. It focused on the National Negro Business League, founded by Booker T. Washington in 1900. This organization became the largest network of Black business owners and professionals in the country, predating the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. That legacy of resilience and innovation is what I wanted the girls to carry with them.

A GLIMMER. Surprise

And of course, I had a surprise in store. At the end of my presentation, I revealed a full-on GLIMMER. by Alise pop-up shop. I brought my banner, ring light, display table, and a full spread of lip glosses. It looked like a mini expo. Every girl got to sample my glosses and leave with one of their choice, completely free. That moment of connection—talking face to face, hearing their dreams, answering their questions—was the highlight of it all.

Reflections and Realizations

Some of the girls told me they wanted to be doctors, lawyers, nurses. They asked questions about business and what I thought about the world around us. And when I looked in their eyes, I could tell they believed me when I said, “You can do this.” Because they can.

The Power of Presence

Before success shows up in the world, it begins inside of us. This experience was about planting seeds. About reminding these young girls where they come from—visionaries, innovators, creators—and who they’re becoming.

The future is bright;
The future is bold;
The future is GLIMMER.
